Undisturbed Soil Sampling

(Retaining critically important soil capillaries, to study activity within)

The physical properties of soils are largely determined in the laboratory. Such laboratory studies usually require undisturbed soil samples, preferably with uniform dimensions. To meet these needs, soil samples are taken in rings of known volume and diameter. For the collection of undisturbed soil samples in soil sample rings, various sampling sets have been developed.

Soil Core Sampler

With this sample set, undisturbed samples can be taken in virtually all soils to a depth of 2 metres with a diameter of 53 millimetres, provided there are no rocks in its way. The samples can be taken from the surface, from the bottom of auger holes or from soil profile pits, both above and below the groundwater level. There are also two other types of sets available with a different ring size. The physical properties of soils are largely determined in the laboratory. Such studies usually require undisturbed soil samples, preferably with uniform dimensions. To meet these requirements, soil samples are taken in rings of a known volume and diameter. Soil sample rings are made of seamless stainless-steel tube, smooth inside and out for as less as possible friction. The bottom of the ring has a cutting edge. The precise made dimensions and thus the volume content of the ring is exact, which makes it highly suitable for laboratory studies. The valve system can be cleaned easily.

Split Tube Sampler

The sampler consists of two stainless steel tubes halves with a working length of 40 centimetres. Undisturbed sampling often poses a problem when removing the sample from the sampling tube, but with this type of sampler, both parts can be easily separated. The sample is located (loose or in a liner) in the detachable tube. The split tube sampler can easily be opened for immediate research or transport of the sample to the laboratory. Depending on the nature of the research, it is recommended (in order to obtain representative samples) to decontaminate the apparatus after every sampling. Thanks to the conical screw thread connection, this sampler is suitable for hammering.

Soil Column Cylinder Auger

The soil column cylinder auger has been developed to take undisturbed soil samples. This allows a fast insight in the build-up of the soil profile, the possibilities for a root system, and more. The greater the insight in these matters, the more effective the soil can be treated and fertilised. With the soil column cylinder auger system it is possible to take almost undisturbed samples with a length of 1 metre and a diameter of 90 millimetres, without digging a profile pit. The auger is hammered into the soil by a gasoline driven hammer (Cobra TT), which can be replaced by an electric Hammer on request. The soil auger has a side cover that is easily removable, for checking and/or for sub-sampling of the sample taken.

Aqualock Sampler

The patented AquaLock is a soil sampler with absolutely unique features. The AquaLock is vibrated down directly to sampling depth where it takes a long and practically undisturbed sample. It combines the advantages of the very rapid, smooth and powerful Sonic drilling technique with the advantages of a piston type core sampler. It can be used for continuous sampling or discrete sampling. The AquaLock Piston Sampler is perfect for alluvial formations like: (heaving) sands, gravel, clay and peat. No casing is needed. If the hole collapses the AL piston will push collapsed material aside.
