Soil Moisture Sensors

One of the most sought after items in our portfolio, Soil moisture sensors are the starting point for studies in agriculture, civil engineering, remediation, slope stability and several diverse studies.
We are in a position to offer soil moisture sensors of two types:

  • ∙ Volumetric Soil moisture sensors
  • ∙ Soil water potential sensors

The most popular method of measurement, of in situ Water Content (indirect) in mediums, is done through Dielectric measurement using Volumetric Soil Moisture Sensors. The two popular technologies that have developed are

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)

Trase utilizes the principle of TDR in order to convert the travel time of a high frequency, electromagnetic pulse into volumetric water content. In practice Trase generates a fast-rise pulse and sends it at the speed of light down a transmission line consisting of two parallel Waveguides that are inserted or buried in the soil. The velocity of propagation of the high frequency, broad band 3GHz wave in soil is determined primarily by the water content. The wave is reflected from the open ends of the Waveguides and returns along the original path. By microprocessor, the travel time of the wave is used to directly calculate the dielectric constant of the surrounding medium.
THE WORLD'S MOST VERSATILE TDR INSTRUMENT - TRASE
Trase is the only self-contained TDR instrument capable of investigating and monitoring not only soils, but a wide variety of other materials as well. It is fully field portable, and when you need to leave it at a remote site for several days or weeks, it can be accessed from home or office. On site, Trase quickly measures the dielectric and subsequent moisture properties of soil, seeds, or other materials at a specific location, or, with the optional Trase Multiplexer, at up to 256 locations. Trase automatically logs your sensors at intervals ranging from once a minute to once a day. Using diverse waveguide configurations and associated conversion tables, Trase rapidly measures new or unusual materials.

Capacitance/Frequency Domain Reflectometery (FDR)

FDR sensors utilize capacitance based technology to provide near continuous measurements within the soil profile / material being measured.
By creating a high frequency electrical field around the sensor, extending into the surrounding environment, the sensors detect the changes in dielectric constant, or permittivity, of the soil over time. At high frequency the measurement is affected predominantly by water molecules. The greater the amount of water, the smaller the frequency measured by the sensor.

FDR Soil Moisture Profile Probes

The ability to monitor moisture across a soil profile at specific depths is a unique asset. This is brought to us by our principal – Sentek Technologies of Australia.

Portable In situ soil moisture profile measurement

Diviner 2000 from Sentek is a portable and robust device measuring soil water over multiple depths (at 10 cm intervals) in the profile. Diviner 2000 consists of a probe and hand-held data logging display unit allowing the user to make onsite management decisions at up to 99 sites at a time.
The Diviner 2000 probe is available in 3 lengths, 0.7 metre, 1.0 metre and 1.6 metres making it ideal for a wide range of applications.
The patented "Swipe and Go" technology means that Diviner 2000 does not need to be held at each individual depth in the soil profile. To take a reading the encapsulated capacitance sensor is simply swiped in and out of the access tube, measuring up to 16 depths in just a few seconds. Learn more

Soil moisture profile measurement

The award winning EnviroSCAN probe is the flagship product of Sentek. It provides the user with great flexibility for precision monitoring of water and salinity at multiple depths in a soil profile.

The EnviroSCAN probe first made its mark in irrigated agriculture, resulting in water savings of 30-50% and substantial yield and quality benefits. Today it is widely used in all forms of irrigated and dryland agriculture, environmental applications, research and education, as well as turf, parks and gardens.

The EnviroSCAN probe is the only commercially available product that allows for monitoring to great depths (up to 40 metres) using the same profiling probe.
Features include:

  • Multiple sensors with flexible depth placement (at 10 cm increments)
  • Monitoring from shallow depths (0 - 10 cm) to deep installations (> 40 metres)
  • Length of probe customised to suit the application (probe length adjustable in the field)
  • Up to 16 sensors on one probe (moisture or moisture/salinity/temperature/humidity)
  • In-built probe orientation and depth settings to enhance sensor repeatability
